Within the quiet landscape of Buttermere in the Lake District, an old oak stands rooted in the earth, its weathered trunk and reaching roots entwined with a crumbling stone wall.

Sunlight filters through the branches, casting delicate shadows across the stones, earth and valley beyond. Here, nature quietly reshapes what time has built, creating beauty in the meeting of permanence and change.

The roots embrace the weathered stone, while light and shadow trace the quiet story etched into the landscape.

'One Upon Another'
Simonside, near Morpeth.

High upon Simonside, beneath the vast February winter sky, a simple cairn stands among weathered rock and winter heather: stone placed upon stone, one upon another.

Each stone has been carried here by a stranger passing this way. No name, inscription or claim remains — only a quiet gesture, added to those that came before

Over time, these individual acts become collective. The cairn becomes a record of unseen journeys and a shared acknowledgement between those who have stood here before and those who will follow.

Solitary yet communal, it speaks of movement, encounter and remembrance: I was here; you were here; we passed this way.

One Upon Another reflects on the simple human impulse to leave something behind — a stone lifted, a stone laid down, one stranger acknowledging another.

'Distant Shores'
Ardwall Isle, Carrick Shore, Dumfries & Galloway

depicts the rugged coast of Ardwall Isle, where fractured rock formations dominate the foreground in angular, weathered planes marked by lichen and tonal variation. Sparse grasses break across the stone, catching sunlight that contrasts with cool shadows in the crevices.

Beyond the rocks, a calm sea stretches towards the distant shores of Carrick, its deep blues softened by atmospheric haze. Above, a lightly clouded sky enhances the sense of coastal openness and quiet clarity.

The horizontal composition emphasizes the sweeping coastal view, balancing geological weight with light and distance.
