Stillness
of Simonside

Original Oil Painting
By Ian Millen

Reserved for upcoming exhibition.

'Stillness of Simonside' A view from Simonside in Northumberland, where a weathered cairn stands among the ancient rocks of the summit. Beyond it, the landscape stretches towards the distant hills in bands of muted green, ochre and rose, beneath a vast and changing Northumbrian sky. The dark heather and rugged foreground give the painting a sense of permanence and solitude, while the balanced cairn becomes a quiet marker of place and time.
It is a landscape shaped by wind, weather and distance - a moment of stillness high above the surrounding countryside.

Distant Shores

Original Oil Painting
By Ian Millen

Reserved for upcoming exhibition.

'Distant Shores' depicts the rugged coast of Ardwall Isle, where fractured rock formations dominate the foreground in angular, weathered planes marked by lichen and tonal variation. Sparse grasses break across the stone, catching sunlight that contrasts with cool shadows in the crevices.

Beyond the rocks, a calm sea stretches towards the distant shores of Carrick, its deep blues softened by atmospheric haze. Above, a lightly clouded sky enhances the sense of coastal openness and quiet clarity.

Painted in oils and finished with Gamvar varnish, the surface carries a subtle sheen that enriches color depth and texture.

Measuring 34cm by 61 cm, the horizontal composition emphasizes the sweeping coastal view, balancing geological weight with light and distance.
